The Realization Process is an embodied approach to healing that draws on both ancient Eastern wisdom and modern understanding of the nervous system, trauma and consciousness.
It was developed by Judith Blackstone, PhD, following a life-changing accident that led her to explore a different way of experiencing herself and the world. Over many years she developed a gentle, body-based practice that supports both psychological healing and the direct experience of what many traditions call our essential nature.
What is non-dual awareness?
One of the central ideas in the Realization Process is non-dual awareness.
The word non-dual simply means “not two.”
Most of the time we experience life as though there is:
me, observing my thoughts
me, feeling my emotions
me, trying to work everything out
There seems to be a separation between “me” and my experience.
In non-dual awareness, that separation begins to soften.
Rather than constantly observing or analysing what is happening, there is simply awareness of the experience itself.
You are not trying to fix your anxiety.
You are simply aware that anxiety is present.
You are not trying to control your body.
You are simply inhabiting it.
What does the research say?
Neuroscientist Zoran Josipovic describes this kind of awareness as “foundational awareness that precedes conceptualisation and intention.”
That sounds complicated, but it’s actually describing something very simple.
Before the mind says:
“This is anxiety.”
“This is good.”
“This is bad.”
“I need to do something about this.”
There is simply the direct experience of sensation, feeling or movement.
This is sometimes called foundational awareness because it is the awareness that is already present before thinking begins.
Many spiritual traditions have given it different names, including Buddha Nature, Presence, Essence or simply Consciousness.
You don’t have to create foundational awareness. It is already here.
One of the most important things to understand is that this isn’t a special state that only experienced meditators can reach.
We simply become so busy thinking, analysing, judging and trying to fix ourselves that we lose touch with it.
The practices in the Realization Process help us gently attune to this underlying awareness through the body.
What does it feel like?
People often describe it as:
- a quiet sense of being
- feeling more at home in themselves
- less caught up in thoughts
- experiencing the body without needing to change it
- feeling more spacious, grounded and connected
It isn’t about emptying your mind or forcing yourself to relax.
It’s about becoming fully present with your experience, just as it is.
What happens in the brain?
Research into meditation and non-dual awareness is still developing, but studies suggest that during these experiences:
- the brain becomes less occupied with constant self-talk and mental storytelling
- experience is less filtered through judgement and interpretation
- awareness remains clear without needing to analyse or control what is happening
- Rather than constantly asking, “What’s wrong with me?” there is simply the experience of being present.
Why does this matter?
With practice, this awareness emerges when people begin to feel safe enough to stop striving.
The constant need to analyse, fix, or improve themselves starts to soften.
From this place, people often discover that healing doesn’t come from trying harder.
It comes from learning to inhabit themselves more fully.
This isn’t about becoming someone new.
It’s about recognising the awareness that has always been here beneath the thoughts, the tension and the protective patterns.
The deepest transformation begins not by doing more, but by finally allowing yourself to simply be.
